They are solanaceous (a nightshade like potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplant), so unripe fruits may be toxic and shouldn’t be eaten raw. These plants grow very quickly and produce an amazing amount of large blueberry-like berries in a short time. Berries turn from glossy to dull black and slightly soft when ripe. These berries keep very well on and off the plant. Tasteless to slightly tart when eaten raw, but the best flavor is revealed when cooked and slightly sweetened. The brilliant purple/black hue is high in the antioxidant anthocyanin. Very fun to grow! r WHERE & WHEN TO PLANT: Sow indoors 6-8 weeks before last spring frost, planting ¼” deep. Keep moist and in adequate lighting. Transplant to larger containers when needed. When danger of frost has passed, accustom plants to outside conditions by moving seedlings to a sheltered area for a week before planting in the garden. Plant 24-36″ apart. These plants will branch out at least 2′.rr REMARKS: Garden Huckleberries prefer a sunny, well-drained location. Soil should be well fertilized with compost/manure. Evenly water throughout the summer. Harvest fruits as ripe as possible, when berries turn from glossy to dull black. Raw berries may be toxic, so use in cooking only and when fully ripe.
