Description
This is not a bar of soap. It’s a dense, dark olive oil paste — the same product used in Moroccan hammams for centuries to soften the skin before deep exfoliation. You spread it on, let it sit, and when you scrub it off (ideally with a Kessa glove), it takes dead skin cells, impurities, and dullness with it. What’s left is visibly smoother, softer, more luminous skin.
The tradition originated over 3,000 years ago in Aleppo, Syria, before migrating to Morocco’s Essaouira region, where it became the centerpiece of the hammam bathing ritual. This version is made in France by Alepia using pure saponified olive oil and glycerin — no artificial additives, no fragrance, no filler. Just the real thing.

What It Does
Softens: The olive oil paste penetrates and loosens the bonds between dead skin cells and healthy skin, making exfoliation dramatically more effective than scrubbing dry or unprepared skin.
Exfoliates: When combined with a Kessa glove (a traditional woven exfoliating mitt), the paste enables deep mechanical exfoliation that removes layers of dead cells you didn’t know were there. You’ll see visible rolls of dead skin coming off — the hallmark of a real hammam scrub.
Nourishes: Unlike harsh chemical exfoliants, the olive oil base moisturizes and calms the skin during the process. Your skin is left nourished, not raw.
Clarifies: Regular use (once or twice per week) improves skin texture, evens skin tone, reduces the appearance of ingrown hairs, and gives skin a natural glow that no moisturizer alone can produce.
The Hammam Ritual — Step by Step
Step 1 — Steam. Soak in a warm bath or stand in a hot shower for 5–10 minutes. The heat and moisture open your pores and soften your skin. This is essential — don’t skip it.
Step 2 — Apply. Scoop a generous amount of black soap paste and spread it over your body (and face, if desired) in a thin, even layer. Avoid the eye area.
Step 3 — Wait. Leave the paste on for 5–10 minutes. You’ll feel it working — a slight tightening as the olive oil draws impurities to the surface.
Step 4 — Scrub. Using a Kessa glove (sold separately), rub your skin in firm, long strokes. You’ll see gray or brown rolls of dead skin appearing — this is normal and deeply satisfying. Work methodically: arms, legs, torso, back.
Step 5 — Rinse. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Your skin should feel impossibly smooth — almost silky. Follow with your usual moisturizer or body oil for best results.
Without a Kessa Glove
You can still use the black soap without the traditional glove. Apply the paste, let it sit, and rinse off — it functions as a deeply nourishing body wash that gently removes surface dead skin on its own. But for the full exfoliation experience, the Kessa glove makes a dramatic difference.
Ingredients
Aqua (Water), Potassium Olivate (Saponified Olive Oil), Glycerin (Natural Humectant), Potassium Hydroxide (Lye — fully consumed during saponification).
Four ingredients. Pure olive oil base. No synthetic fragrances. No preservatives. No palm oil. No SLS/SLES. No parabens. No dyes. No microplastics.
Format & Usage
Format: Dark, dense paste in a 200mL jar. Not a solid bar — it has a thick, buttery consistency similar to a body butter.
Frequency: Use once or twice per week as an exfoliating treatment. Can be used more frequently as a simple body wash (without the extended soak time) for daily nourishment.
Suitable for: All skin types. Particularly effective for rough or dull skin, ingrown hairs, keratosis pilaris (bumpy skin on arms/thighs), uneven skin tone, and pre-self-tan preparation.
Storage: Keep at room temperature. Close the jar tightly between uses. Lasts approximately 2–3 months with weekly use.
