Description
The bamboo chasen (matcha whisk) is the essential tool for preparing authentic matcha. Handcrafted from a single piece of bamboo, its dozens of fine prongs are designed to whisk matcha powder and hot water into a smooth, frothy suspension — something no spoon, fork, or mechanical frother can replicate.
Why a Bamboo Whisk Matters
Matcha powder doesn’t dissolve — it suspends. The chasen’s many fine prongs break up clumps and incorporate air to create matcha’s signature creamy froth (crema). Metal whisks scratch ceramic bowls and don’t produce the same texture. The bamboo chasen has been the tool of choice for over 500 years for good reason.
How to Whisk Matcha
- Sift 1 tsp (2g) of matcha into your bowl through a fine strainer
- Add 2–3 oz of water at 160–175°F / 70–80°C (not boiling)
- Whisk in a rapid W or M motion (not circular) for 15–30 seconds
- Done when a fine, consistent foam covers the surface
Care Instructions
- Before first use, soak the tips in warm water for 1–2 minutes to soften
- After each use, rinse under warm water (no soap)
- Place on a ceramic whisk holder (kusenaoshi) to air-dry — this preserves the prong shape and dramatically extends the whisk’s life
- Never put in the dishwasher
